Bennett's second novel is as good as his first effort - if not better. The character development is excellent and found myself actually getting upset over the fate of some of the characters in the book! The book is definitely a page turner with a plot that moves along briskly but with enough detail to make the reader feel like he or she is walking the streets of an earthquake stricken Chicago. The city comes alive with Bennett's prose and fine eye for detail - and taking this whirlwind journey through the eyes of the story's blind protaganist makes it all then more compelling and fascinating for the reader.This is a great read for fans of murder mysteries or simply those who love and appreciate a good yarn.

really enjoy books that deal with the future, and while Blind Traveler's Blues isn't too far in the future, the technological advances and changes that I enjoy so much are present, and prove to be quite epic and interesting. I loved Bennett's descriptions of the gadgets Douglas uses throughout the story, and his character was phenomenal as well. Having lost his eye sight in an accident a few years prior, Douglas is a kick butt hero relying on his other four senses, that of smell, hearing, touch, and taste. The fact that he's not exceptionally bitter or harboring a "woe is me" attitude quickly elevated him in my opinion, making him an easily likable hero that the reader can't help but root for as the story progresses.
In terms of his abilities, Douglas is a normal person, and I really enjoyed that about this novel. While his other senses are heightened, he doesn't hold any superpowers and everything he is able to do makes perfect sense, even as he determines the real cause of death of a woman he met on a plane. This was a great mystery novel, and it's intertwining of the future, natural disasters, plagues, and murder provided a riveting read.
I especially enjoyed the dramatic irony Bennett provided by allowing the reader to know who the villain was throughout the story. While it is always nice to be surprised by the villains reveal at the end of a novel, I think the fact that the reader knows who, how, and why adds to the believability of Blind Traveler's Blues. Through knowing the villain's identity and thoughts, we are able to see exactly how Douglas is able to piece everything together, even though he is blind, and it's plausibility is stunning.
This is a very well written novel and it is, in fact, a stand-alone sequel to another of Bennett's novels, Blind Traveler Down a Dark River. Having not yet read the prequel, I can personally attest to this novel's ability to keep the reader up-to-date even though it is a sequel. Rest assured, you don't have to read the prequel to understand events in this great novel.
Blind Traveler's Blues by Robert P. Bennett is a not so in the distant future tale featuring an unlikely hero - Douglas Abledan, a software expert who is also blind. Douglas becomes involved in a homicide involving a female botanist he met days earlier while on a flight to Chicago. Throw in a corn plague that is soon to become catastrophic on a world-wide level, sonar canes, and other futuristic gadgets - and you are in for one roller coaster of a ride!
I absolutely loved the beginning of Blind Traveler's Blues. I found it reminiscent of a Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child novel in that the chapter ends in such a cliffhanger you find yourself compelled to continue reading to find out exactly what is going on. The fact that Douglas is blind makes for a very interesting premise as well. I enjoyed experiencing Chicago through Douglas' eyes - or rather his other senses - as he navigated the world around him.
Robert P. Bennett's literary voice is both refreshing and outstanding in that you not only feel as if you are reading the novel but you actually feel as though you are immersed in the world he has created. I was able to experience the frustration that Douglas felt at the stereotypes and prejudices he faced - some intentional, others not - as someone who is "visually impaired". Bennett is able to transfer these feelings to the reader without coming across as though he is preaching or campaigning. I applaud him for that. Douglas is a very likeable hero who I hope to read more about.
Blind Traveler's Blues is the second in the Douglas Abledan series - Blind Traveler Down a Dark River being the first - but can be read as a stand-alone. In conclusion, I've never been a fan of sci-fi or futuristic novels but this one not only grabbed my attention from page one - it held it until the very last page.
This is just as great as the first novel, only this time, the characters are better developed and the story moves more quickly. Robert Bennett does such a good job with the backbone of the story, and I have come to have even more affection for Abledan, his fearless hero. Do yourself a favor and read this book!
